Why Is German Parliamentary Election Important to Europe?

Judging by the results of several sociological surveys, the chances of electing Angela Markel for the next 4 years is fairly high at the moment. Even though there is almost no intrigue in the election, the international community has still been closely watching it, Market Leader reports.

The election is scheduled for today, September 24th. Not only are they important from the stand point of choosing the Chancellor. The thing is, for the first time since World War II, the Germany parliament may be represented by 6 political parties at a time, including the right-wing nationalists. Also, this is the first election since the 2015 migration crisis.

For those of you who don’t know, a couple of years ago, Markel’s government announced the so-called “open door” policy. As a result, over 900 000 refugees came to Germany. Back then, Angela Merkel promised the people that they would be able to cope with this problem. This is what happened. However, Merkel’s political party lost a lot of their electorate.

Germany’s on the Verge of Major Changes

The thing is that the political situation in Germany is now changing. There is a lot of defragmentation going on in Germany’s political life. Chances are that “Alternative for Germany” is going to win a lot of seats in the parliament and become the 3rd biggest political power in Germany. This party is against Islam and Muslim migrants.

At the same time, the previous parliamentary election ended up with 4 parties sharing seats in the parliament. This time, we may well see 6 political powers in the German parliament, which is something we haven’t seen since WWII. For now, there are 34 political parties participating in the election.

It should also be noted that this election is of major importance to the entire European Union. The thing is that Germany’ is Europe’s biggest and strongest economy. It contributes most of all to the union’s wellbeing. This means that German politicians play the key role in determining the future of Europe.
